September Newsletter

And just like that, it’s fall…

Wishing you all a very happy start to your September and an as-easy-as-it-can-be back to school for all you parents. Is it just me, or does it seem like we went to bed in summer and woke up the next morning to fall? It seems the transition always gets quicker each year but it’s something we should be used to by now.

We’ve been seeing a very active real estate market the past few weeks, and I think it may be a telling sign of the months to come. Although location, price point and marketing strategy are the defining factors in any sale, it’s also important to consider timing. If you are in the market to buy or sell, it’s a great time to consider doing so just before the holidays.

You know where to reach me, I’m available anytime…

See you in October!

Did you know that we consumed 107% more Oatmeal in Alberta this month than we did last year at the same time? Oatmeal consumption is up $15,000,000 year to date.

Personally I’m an eggs & toast guy. Poached soft, sourdough, with lots of salt and pepper. ???? But hey, makes sense doesn’t it! #COVID19

Usually, heading back to school is a time of excitement for both kids and parents. But this year is certainly different.

Here are my tips to make the transition a bit less scary and more safe:

1. Encourage your kids to ask questions
Making sure your children feel comfortable is imperative, yet the only way to ensure they do is to make sure they feel comfortable asking questions, clarifying uncertainties and telling them that it’s okay and normal to feel scared. Encourage your children to express their feelings with you and their teachers. Remember that your child may have different reactions to stress; be patient and understanding.

2. Teach and model good hygiene practices for your children
Wash your hands with soap and safe water frequently. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water, if hands are visibly dirty o Ensure that safe drinking water is available and toilets or latrines are clean and available at home o Ensure waste is safely collected, stored and disposed of o Cough and sneeze into a tissue or your elbow and avoid touching your face, eyes, mouth, nose.

3. Prevent stigma by using facts and reminding students to be considerate of one another.

4. Use encouragement and small rewards for behaviour
Tell your child what you want them to do. Be specific and clear, using positive language rather than telling them what not to do. Use the when-then principle. For example, “when you complete 3 classes then we will do some baking.”

5. Show them how to cope
If you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed about the pandemic or the burdens faced by you and your family, recruit the help of family and friends to talk it through. Try to find outdoor activities you can do together with your child, and give yourself permission to recharge your batteries through activities you enjoy alone.Of course, be sure to reach out to your family doctor or a mental health professional to keep your own mental health fine-tuned as well.

Surprise Guests With Even More BlanketsA little extra “cozy” never hurt anyone! Here, a simple rolled blanket makes for a charming addition to a guest bedroom.
Play With Pumpkin Patterns Pumpkins don’t have to be orange, you know! Thanks to a bit of Mod Podge, this one features a fabulous blue-and-white pattern.
Place Pumpkins in Unexpected PlacesEvery area of your home deserves a chance to get in on the fall action! Even this less-trafficked corner feels comfy-cozy thanks to the addition of a few white pumpkins.

Gourds Can Fit Just About AnywhereWe love the way gourds can be placed just about everywhere, filling in empty shelf space and even finding a home in ceramic vessels. It’s an imaginative, organic approach to fall decorating.

Use Cozy Blankets in New WaysBetcha never thought of using those cozy blankets for this purpose! Two tartan beauties turn this back porch table into a work of art. (The oversize wreath certainly doesn’t hurt either.)

Liven Up Your Dining Room With a Fun CentrepieceWho says over-the-top centrepieces have to be reserved for special occasions and holidays? This one can be left on your table all season long for just a little extra seasonal charm.

Spruce Up Your BathroomA fresh bloom or two can brighten up your bathroom at any time of year, but it’s all the more wonderful to look at during autumn. Bring the colors of your front yard inside with just a few orange mums.

Display Gourds in Your KitchenThere’s nothing easier than filling a basket with some decorative gourds. Here, they turn an otherwise simplistic (but lovely!) kitchen into a festive, seasonal retreat.
